Gentlemen Take Polaroids
In: The Polaroid: Imperfect, Yet Magical
Michael Kimmelmann remembers the legendary Model 95 and SX-70.
And here one more moment of nostalgia:
Michael Kimmelmann remembers the legendary Model 95 and SX-70.
Mystery clung to each impending image as it took shape, the camera conjuring up pictures of what was right before one’s eyes, right before one’s eyes. The miracle of photography, which Polaroids instantly exposed, never lost its primitive magic. And what resulted, as so many sentimentalists today lament, was a memory coming into focus on a small rectangle of film.
The discussion film vs. digital seems over though left out Polaroid as a medium. Polaroid's demise slipped through the consciousness. Its use was democratic, often professional and sometimes elitist.Like every other photographer who entered the field before the digital age, I processed tons of 668 and 669. I never possessed a Model 95 nor SX-70 but I still use a Konica with a Polaroid back pack and I still have stock of Polaroid 665 film which also produces a large negative. Rather then it's magical and wondrous process I was more drawn by the peculiar colour saturation of the Polaroid. It's effect is so dreamlike, pleasant and defying any approach of reality.
